Recycling Practices

In recent years, more Spotsylvania residents have been stepping up to do their part in protecting the environment—and recycling is a great place to start. But even with the best intentions, it’s easy to toss the wrong items into the bin. To make recycling truly effective, it's important to understand what can—and cannot—be recycled right here in Spotsylvania County.

♻️ Why Recycling Matters Locally

Recycling conserves natural resources, reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, and cuts down on pollution. When we recycle properly, we also help Spotsylvania County reduce costs associated with waste management and support a cleaner, healthier community.

But here’s the catch: contaminated or incorrect materials in the recycling bin can do more harm than good. In fact, they can cause entire batches of recyclables to be discarded as trash.

✅ What You Can Recycle in Spotsylvania

Spotsylvania County partners with regional waste services to manage recycling at designated convenience centers. Here are the materials that are commonly accepted:

  • Paper & Cardboard: Newspapers, magazines, office paper, cereal boxes, cardboard (flattened)

  • Plastic Bottles & Containers: #1 and #2 plastics (check the bottom of the container for the number)

  • Glass: Clear, brown, and green glass bottles and jars (rinsed, no lids)

  • Aluminum & Steel Cans: Soda cans, food cans (rinsed clean)

📍 Tip: All items should be clean, empty, and dry before recycling!

🚫 What to Keep Out of Your Bin

Unfortunately, not everything with a recycling symbol is actually recyclable through local curbside or center-based programs. Here are some common no-go items:

  • Plastic bags and film (like grocery bags, sandwich bags, or bubble wrap)

  • Styrofoam containers and packaging

  • Greasy pizza boxes and food-soiled paper

  • Batteries, electronics, and light bulbs

  • Clothing and textiles

  • Garden hoses, cords, and string lights

  • Toys, hangers, and black plastic containers

When in doubt, leave it out—or better yet, check with the county's recycling guide or staff at the convenience center.
